A Taste of Independence: Our ASDAN Adventure

For the second ASDAN unit this year, students have been working on thinking more independently. They have been learning how to make their own choices and explain why they made them, an important skill that helps build confidence in everyday life.

To bring this learning to life, we went on a fun trip out for a meal at Wetherspoons. Before we went, students looked through different menus and picked what they wanted to eat. They then chatted with staff and friends about their choices, whether it was their favourite food, something they had never tried before, or a healthier option. It was a great way for everyone to practise making decisions and talking about them in a real life situation.

As well as supporting the ASDAN work, the trip was a brilliant way for students to build life skills. For many, it was a chance to meet new people, be in a different social setting, and experience what it is like to pay for their own meal. These simple moments really helped boost their confidence and gave them a real sense of independence.
Spending time together in a relaxed and fun environment also helped students grow closer and practise their social skills. There were lots of laughs, good conversations, and support for each other when making decisions, all of which are key parts of building friendships and personal growth.
All in all, it was a great day. It mixed learning with fun and gave students real world experience that tied in perfectly with this part of the ASDAN course. More than that, it helped them feel more confident, independent, and ready to take on new situations.
We are so proud of how each student got involved and the thoughtful way they spoke about their meal choices. Trips like this show just how powerful real life learning can be. It is not just about what happens in the classroom, it is about preparing students for life.
